Disabled Creatives and Inclusive Shows Nominated at the Canadian Screen Awards

The DSO is thrilled to see disabled creatives and productions advancing accessibility and inclusion recognized in the 2026 edition of the Canadian Screen Awards, Canada's premier annual awards celebrating excellence in film, English-language television, and digital media. Breaking stereotypes about what’s possible for someone living with cerebral palsy, You’re My Hero (Longhope Media Inc. / CBC Gem) has been nominated for Best Web Program or Series, Fiction (Digital). The show features Ian, a blunt, unfiltered 20-something who navigates the social pressures of life in an unforgiving world not designed for wheels. Sean Towgood, You’re My Hero’s creator, writer and star, is also up for Best Lead Performance, Web Program or Series (Digital).

Produced for Accessible Media Inc. (AMI), Collar of Duty Kids (Summerhill Media Inc.) is in the running for Best Children’s or Youth Non-Fiction Program or Series (Television). This touching documentary series takes viewers into the adventures kids experience with their service and therapy animals.

Also from AMI, the writing team behind All Access Comedy (Pilot Light Productions) — D. J. Demers, Joze Piranian, Dan Barra-Berger and Michael McCreary — earned a nomination for Best Writing, Variety or Sketch Comedy (Television).

AMI's All Access Comedy II is a one-hour network stand-up comedy special with a difference. Each of the five comics featured is physically disabled. One is deaf. One has cerebral palsy. One is blind. One is autistic. One has a pronounced stutter. All of them are hilarious, professional comedians. The result is a funny, informative and highly entertaining look into the world of the disabled. The performances are observational, insightful and laugh-out-loud funny – proudly representing what stand-up comedy does best. Viewers will laugh and learn.

Congratulations to all nominees! It’s exciting to see work by disabled creatives resonating with broad audiences and proving that when funders invest in disability-led storytelling, the results are compelling, original and award-worthy. We hope to see even more doors open for disabled voices as we build a more accessible and inclusive screen industry in Canada together.
